Westminster,
Colorado was inhabited by herds of buffalo prior to 1850. There are some
evidence of the Arapaho Indians that have settled here. The Colorado Gold
Rush in 1858 and the Homestead Act of 1862 brought many people to the
Colorado area instead of heading further west to California. Jim Baker
was considered the first white man to pave the way in this area. Baker
ran a toll ferry as well as a store in the area before moving on to
Wyoming. The first permanent settler was Pleasant DeSpain in 1970. He
and his son planted grain, apple, and cherry orchards. The area was known
as Harris until 1911 when it was incorporated as a city and changed its
name to Westminster, after Westminster University.
